Power Fluctuations Cause Breakdown of Critical Medical Equipment

The Overlord of the Waala Traditional Council, Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV has raised concerns over the impact of unreliable electricity supply on healthcare delivery in the Upper West Region, warning that frequent power fluctuations are contributing to the breakdown of critical medical equipment.

The concern was contained in a speech read by Jinpenhi Naa Kadir Ibrahim on behalf of the Overlord of the Waala Traditional Council during the celebration of the 2026 Dumba Festival.

This year’s festival is being celebrated under the theme: “Promoting Discipline and Progress; Protecting Our Youth from Substance Abuse.”

In the speech, the Overlord said the Upper West Regional Hospital currently lacks a dedicated power transmission line, leaving the facility vulnerable to frequent power fluctuations and interruptions.

He noted that these power disruptions have contributed to repeated breakdowns of critical medical equipment and warned that the situation could soon affect the hospital’s dialysis machines.

“Our health facilities are crying for support to survive,” the Council stated.

According to him, the unreliable power supply poses a significant risk to the delivery of essential healthcare services, particularly services that depend on stable electricity.

The Overlord identified emergency care, intensive care, theatre operations and diagnostic services, among other critical hospital functions, as areas that could be severely affected by persistent power interruptions.

Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV therefore called for urgent attention to the electricity challenges facing the hospital, stressing that a reliable power supply is essential to protecting lives and ensuring the effective delivery of healthcare services in the region.
