The Wa Municipal District has recorded the highest number of people living with HIV in the Upper West Region, according to data on HIV cases across the region.

This was revealed by Madam A-abida Abu Ahmed, the Upper West Regional Technical Coordinator of Ghana AIDS Commission in an exclusive interview with Kangyiri Radio.

The Ghana Aids Commission’s 2025 sub national estimates shared with Kangyiri Radio indicate that 2,083 people are living with HIV in the Wa Municipality, comprising 606 males, 1,324 females and 153 children aged 0–14.

Nadowli-Kaleo District recorded the second-highest number, with 741 people living with HIV, including 221 males, 477 females and 43 children.

Jirapa District follows with 563 cases, comprising 177 males, 345 females and 41 children, while Wa East recorded 533 cases, including 166 males, 329 females and 38 children.

Lawra District has 522 people living with HIV, made up of 165 males, 320 females and 37 children, while Nandom recorded 495 cases, comprising 154 males, 303 females and 36 children.

Sissala East recorded 469 cases, including 145 males, 288 females and 33 children. Wa West has 389 cases, with 110 males, 252 females and 27 children.

Sissala West recorded 337 cases, comprising 99 males, 205 females and 38 children, while Daffiama-Bussie-Issa recorded 253 cases, including 79 males, 158 females and 16 children.

Lambussie recorded the lowest number of cases among the districts listed, with 182 people living with HIV, comprising 57 males, 112 females and 13 children.

The figures show that women constitute the majority of people living with HIV across all the districts, with the number of females significantly exceeding males in each district.

The data also highlights the continued burden of HIV among children, with every district recording cases among people aged between 0 and 14 years.

The distribution of cases according to Madam Abida underscores the need for sustained HIV prevention, testing, treatment and public education programmes across the Upper West Region, particularly in districts with higher numbers of people living with HIV.
