Okra sellers at the Wa Central Market in the Upper West Region have appealed to exporters and food processors to purchase surplus okra to help reduce losses resulting from the current glut.
The sellers said they are struggling to sell their produce due to the large quantities available on the market, forcing them to dispose of unsold okra as garbage.
One of the traders said the situation was causing them significant losses, as they were unable to recover the money invested in purchasing the produce.
“We are unable to sell it and we dispose it of as garbage,” the trader said.
Another seller, pointing to a full sack of okra, said the produce would have to be thrown away because she could not find buyers.
“This sack is full and we will dispose it because we couldn’t sell it,” she lamented.
The traders are therefore calling on exporters and processors to take advantage of the surplus by purchasing the produce for processing and other value-added activities.
“We need exporters to come and buy the produce for processing,” one of the sellers appealed.
They believe creating alternative markets for the surplus okra would help reduce post-harvest losses and provide farmers and traders with better returns on their produce.
