The Wa Central Prison operating under the Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana Prisons Service has appealed for the provision of a standby generator to ensure uninterrupted power supply and strengthen security at the facility during power outages.
Speaking on the need for improved facilities at the prison, Seth Kwame Owusu, Chief Officer and Deputy Relations Officer at the Wa Central Prison, said a standby generator would help keep essential operations running and maintain adequate security whenever there is a power outage.
“If there is no electricity in the Upper West Region for a month, imagine what we will go through,” he lamented.
He also appealed for medicines and first-aid supplies to support the prison’s infirmary and enable it to continue providing basic healthcare services to inmates.
According to him, adequate medical supplies are essential to ensure that inmates who fall sick or sustain minor injuries can receive timely treatment at the facility without unnecessary delays.
“Many people don’t know we have an infirmary. We sue it to provide first aid to our inmates. But the infirmary is not functioning because it is almost empty,” he noted.
He therefore called on the government, organisations and other well-meaning individuals to support the prison with a standby generator, medicines and first-aid supplies to improve both security and healthcare delivery.
