Hon. Adams Yahaya Jiga, Assembly Member for the Danku Electoral Area in the Wa Central Constituency of the Upper West Region, has called for a demonstration to demand the rehabilitation of the area’s poor road network.
He said political affiliations and the reluctance of some residents to take action against politicians were making it difficult to organise a demonstration to compel successive governments to address the road problem.
According to him, successive political parties in government have promised to fix the road, but the community is yet to see the expected improvement.
Hon. Jiga disclosed that he nearly boycotted a meeting with the Wa Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) after what he described as a personal attack on him during discussions about the road.
He said the MCE allegedly made remarks that sought to turn residents against him, despite his efforts as the assembly member to address their concerns.
He also questioned why roads in some communities, including Jonga, had been tarred while Danku continued to face challenges with its road network.
The assembly member said demonstrations remained a necessary means of drawing the attention of politicians to the concerns of residents, but some people were unwilling to participate for fear of displeasing political leaders.
He therefore urged residents to put aside their political differences and unite in demanding better roads for the community.
Hon. Jiga further cited Alhaji Sena and Nasona as contractors who were awarded road contracts in 2007/2008 and 2015/2016, respectively, although the status and details of the contracts were not specified.
“One thing we needed to do is demonstration but we couldn’t. I wanted to boycott our meeting with the MCE. When we went there, the MCE took the matter personal and attacked me as the assembly member. The MCE said people who are serous had their road tarred and example is Jonga.
“MCE said a lot of things to turn the people against me that I am doing my work. He lambasted me and I nearly boycotted the meeting. Parties in government have all promised to fix the road.”
“What politicians are afraid of is demonstrations but some of us don’t want to be part of it because they don’t want to make the politicians unhappy. What we need to do now is to organize a demonstration but party affiliations is making it impossible.”
