At least three persons have sustained a gunshot wound during a protest by some youth in Wechiau, the capital of the Wa West District, following the death of a youth leader, Tijani Abu.
The Assembly Member for the Wechiau Electoral Area, Abudi Abu, confirmed the incident, saying the injured person was hit in the arm when the police allegedly fired warning shots to disperse the protesting youth.
According to Mr. Abudi, the youth allegedly set fire to a house following the death of Tijani Abu, who was arrested by the police on Saturday.
He said the deceased was arrested on Saturday, and he followed up to check on him the following day.
‘Saturday between the hours of 9 and 10, the young guy called Tijani Abu was arrested by the Wechiau Police Command and to be honest, it was an eye saw.
He was beaten mercilessly before he was taken away to Wa. We earlier thought they will take him to the police station. But he was taken to the SWAT.”
Mr. Abudi explained that early on Sunday morning, police officers were seen across the town. He later travelled to Wa to check on Tijani, only to be informed that he had died.
He said he and others subsequently followed up to the Regional Hospital, where they confirmed the death.
Mr. Abudi added that they were in a meeting at the Chief’s Palace discussing the matter, where they learned that some youth had allegedly set fire to a house.
He said the police responded by firing warning shots, during which one of the protesters was reportedly struck in the arm.
