Lack of JHS Block Hinders Education in Domawa

Residents of Domawa in the Varempere Electoral Area of the Wa West District say the lack of a functional Junior High School (JHS) block is affecting teaching and learning, forcing students to study under difficult conditions.

Speaking exclusively to Kangyiri Radio, a resident, Abudu Sakara, said the community is deeply concerned about the state of education, explaining that the JHS block, which was constructed through communal labour, has deteriorated over the years.

According to him, the poor condition of the school building, coupled with the lack of furniture, has made learning difficult for students.

“We don’t have a JHS, and it is a worry to us. The school was built by the community, but it has now deteriorated. The students are suffering because there are no chairs,” he said.

Mr. Sakara also highlighted the lack of a dam as another major challenge facing the community.

He explained that the absence of a reliable water source leaves cattle without water during the dry season and limits opportunities for dry-season farming.

According to him, the construction of a dam would encourage many young people who engage in illegal mining (galamsey) to venture into dry-season farming to earn a decent income instead.

Another resident, Seidu Sakara, said Domawa is confronted with several other developmental challenges, particularly in the health sector.

He revealed that residents are making efforts to construct a maternity ward but lack the resources to complete the project.

Mr. Sakara also expressed concern over the absence of accommodation for nurses, saying the situation affects healthcare delivery in the community.

He noted that residents have to travel to Dorimo or Wechiau whenever a child falls ill at night because there is no adequate health facility to provide emergency care.

“If a child falls sick late in the night, you have to travel to Dorimo or Wechiau for medical attention,” he said.

The residents appealed to the government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and other development partners to support the community by rehabilitating the JHS block, providing classroom furniture, constructing a dam, completing the maternity ward, and building accommodation for nurses to improve education, healthcare, and livelihoods in Domawa.
