The Secretary of the Wala Traditional Council, Jinpenhi Naa Kadir Ibrahim, has blamed poor sanitation in the Wa Municipality on negative public attitudes, weak enforcement of sanitation by-laws and inadequate public education.
Speaking at the Wa Naa Palace in Wa, on Friday, 24 July 2026, Naa Kadir Ibrahim said many residents continue to practice open defecation and indiscriminately dump refuse, making it difficult to keep communities clean.
“Open defecation, indiscriminate disposal of waste and poor waste management continue to affect our communities because many people fail to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean,” he said.
He acknowledged government initiatives such as the monthly nationwide clean-up exercise and the National Sanitation Day programs but said low public participation continues to undermine their effectiveness.
“The Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies must strengthen the enforcement of sanitation by-laws and punish offenders while rewarding communities that maintain clean environments,” Jinpenhi Naa Kadir Ibrahim said.
He also advised schools to instil good sanitation habits in children from an early age and called on traditional authorities to educate their communities and mobilize residents for regular clean-up exercises.
He further appealed to government, district assemblies and development partners to provide more household and community toilet facilities, especially in rural areas.
