A community tilapia farming project in Dorimon is transforming livelihoods and driving local development, with proceeds from the initiative funding the renovation of a school block and creating employment opportunities for residents.
The Assembly Member for the Dorimon Electoral Area, Hon. Saaka Fuseini, disclosed that the community’s Tilapia Farmers Association has used revenue generated from fish production to support the renovation of a Junior High School block, while also creating jobs for young people and women in the area.
Speaking on Kangyiri Radio’s Morning Soul programme, Hon. Fuseini said the project, which is supported by the Fisheries Commission, has grown into one of the leading sources of tilapia in the Upper West Region.
“Most of the tilapia sold to restaurants and hotels in the Upper West Region are coming from Dorimon,” he said.
According to him, the initiative has significantly improved the livelihoods of community members by providing employment and generating funds for development projects.
“The fishing project has created jobs for the youth and women. It has also helped us raise funds to support the building of the JHS block,” he stated.
Hon. Fuseini appealed to government and development partners to provide additional cages and cold storage facilities to enable the association to increase production and meet the growing demand for tilapia across the region.
“We need more cages and cold storage facilities to help expand tilapia production in the region,” he appealed.
