The Member of Parliament for Wa West Constituency, Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu, has called on police officers serving in the district to exercise restraint in the use of firearms and uphold the highest standards of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
His remarks follow the shooting of three people during a protest in Wechiau, where tensions escalated after the death of Tijani Abu, popularly known as “Master One,” while in police custody.
Addressing police personnel in the district, Hon. Toobu stressed that officers should resort to the use of firearms only when all other lawful options have been exhausted.
“The use of the weapon should be the last resort. It is not professional to be trigger-happy,” he said.
The former senior police officer also encouraged commanders to strengthen operational safety by deploying personnel in pairs during assignments.
“I encourage you to do the buddy system, at least two at a go. One will support the other,” he advised.
Hon. Toobu further urged officers to foster positive relations with residents by reassuring communities of the Police Service’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
“Assure the people of Wa West that you are here to protect lives, property and maintain peace,” he stated.
He emphasized that professionalism, restraint and community engagement are essential to maintaining public confidence in law enforcement and preserving peace and security across the district.
