A Public Health Nurse at the Wa Municipal Health Directorate, Madam Felicity Kpare, has emphasized the importance of initiating breastfeeding within 30 minutes after delivery, saying the practice helps establish an early bond between a mother and her newborn.
Speaking exclusively to Kangyiri Radio, Madam Kpare explained that breastfeeding shortly after birth provides an important opportunity for the mother and baby to have their first close physical contact.
“Mothers should breastfeed their newborn babies within thirty minutes after birth,” she said.
According to her, this early interaction helps create a strong emotional connection between the mother and child and can contribute to the baby’s sense of comfort and security.
Madam Kpare stressed that health workers have an important role to play in supporting mothers to initiate breastfeeding as early as possible after delivery.
She assured mothers that nurses and other health professionals would provide the necessary assistance and guidance to make early breastfeeding possible, particularly for mothers who may experience difficulties immediately after childbirth.
She therefore encouraged mothers to cooperate with health workers and take advantage of the support available to ensure that their babies receive breast milk as soon as possible after birth.
Madam Kpare said early breastfeeding is not only beneficial to the health of the newborn but also provides an important first opportunity for mothers and babies to establish a close bond.
