The Upper West Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Alhaji Mujeeb Suleyman, has attributed part of the poor performance of pupils who sat for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to the failure of successive governments to fulfil promises made to teachers.

He said the situation could affect teacher motivation and ultimately have implications for teaching and learning in schools.

Alhaji Suleyman made the comments following the industrial action embarked upon by pre-tertiary teacher unions over unpaid benefits associated with promotions granted to teachers.

According to him, the concerns of teachers must be addressed promptly, particularly when government and education authorities have made commitments to improve their welfare and working conditions.
He said failure to fulfil such commitments could undermine efforts to improve learning outcomes and called for greater attention to teachers’ concerns.

The GNAT Upper West Regional Chairman was speaking on the impact of teachers’ welfare and working conditions on education outcomes.

“One of the reasons behind the poor performance of pupils who sat for BECE is the inability of successive governments to fulfill their promises for teachers.”
