A Health Promotion Officer at Wa Municipal Hospital, Amamata Yussif, has cautioned the public against the habit of stopping prescribed medications, particularly antibiotics, before completing the full course of treatment.

She gave the advice on Wednesday during Kangyiri Ansuma, the morning show on Kangyiri Radio.

According to Amamata, many people discontinue their medication as soon as they begin to feel better, without completing the dosage prescribed by a healthcare professional.

She explained that this practice can cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics, making the medicines less effective when they are needed in the future.

“If you have the habit of not finishing your prescribed medication, especially antibiotics, your body may no longer respond effectively to those antibiotics when you fall sick again,” she cautioned.

Amamata noted that antibiotic resistance has become a growing public health concern and urged patients to take all prescribed doses, even after their symptoms improve.

She encouraged the public to follow the instructions of healthcare professionals and avoid self-adjusting or prematurely discontinuing medication.

The health practitioner stressed that responsible use of antibiotics is essential to preserving their effectiveness and ensuring they remain capable of treating bacterial infections in the future.
