Economic Adviser to the Vice President, Professor Sherif Mahmud Khalid, has donated essential items to needy Senior High School (SHS) freshmen in the Wa Municipality.

The donation comprised 250 chop boxes, 200 buckets of various sizes, 1,100 plates and 420 mugs, providing beneficiaries with essential items needed for their stay in Senior High School.

The items, which were donated on his behalf by friends and family, are being distributed to selected needy students in collaboration with Assembly Members from the 31 electoral areas in the municipality.

Speaking at the presentation, the Wa Municipal Assembly Presiding Member, Nuhu Wahab, said the assembly members were pleased to receive the items for onward distribution to the beneficiaries.

“We have also come here to gladly receive the items from Prof. Sherif and hand them over to the Assembly Members for onward distribution to the parents and students. Education is the most important thing and all students here should take their education serious. We hope to get professors and doctors from these students in the next 10 to 15 years,” he said.

The representative of Prof. Sherif Mahmud Khalid, Khalid A. Rahaman, urged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and make good use of the support.

He said the donation was intended to reduce the financial burden on parents, adding that Prof. Sherif was committed to supporting needy students.

“The students receiving the donation should count themselves lucky. You should be serious with your studies. If Prof. Sherif was not serious, he wouldn’t have risen to the point of giving back to society. He is not doing this because of politics. That is why the Assembly Members were tasked to bring needy students from their electoral areas,” he said.

Mr. Rahaman added that the initiative would be expanded in subsequent years, saying Prof. Sherif was expected to provide more support to students.

Some Assembly Members described the donation as significant, with Issahaku Abdulai, Kumbiehi Assembly Member, saying he had not witnessed such an initiative during his three years as an Assembly Member.

Another Assembly Member, Sumaila Inusah, Busa assembly member said similar interventions by public officials were being implemented in other parts of the country.

Zakaria Ibrahim, popularly known as Thunder, the Assembly Member for Dobile electoral area, said the initiative was the first time Assembly Members in Wa Central had been given the opportunity to identify needy students from their electoral areas for such support.

He said the initiative would provide much-needed assistance to families struggling to meet the cost of sending their children to Senior High School.

“In Wa Central, this is the first-time assembly members were given the opportunity to bring students from their electoral areas to receive such a support. We see such donations on TV and we always think is AI because we have never experienced it in Wa Central. MPs are doing it for their constituents but we don’t know why our MP is not doing it.

Beneficiaries and parents also expressed appreciation for the gesture.

One of the beneficiaries from Dandafuro said the items would significantly reduce the financial burden on him and his family.

“It would have been difficult to afford all these items,” the student said.

A parent also expressed gratitude to Prof. Sherif for the support and his intention to assist needy students.
