Pelpuo Supports Wa Municipal Hospital, Health Directorate with Medical Equipment; Renovates Male and Children’s Wards
The Member of Parliament for Wa Central, Dr. Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has reaffirmed his commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the constituency with a series of interventions, including the renovation of the Male and Children’s Wards at the Wa Municipal Hospital and the provision of medical equipment to health facilities.
The interventions, according to the MP and health authorities, are aimed at addressing critical infrastructure and equipment challenges confronting health facilities across the wa municipality.
Dr. Pelpuo made the remarks during a visit to the Wa Municipal Hospital and the Wa Municipal Health Directorate to inspect completed renovation works and present medical equipment to support healthcare delivery.
At the Wa Municipal Hospital, Dr. Pelpuo said he was prompted to intervene after personally witnessing the deteriorated condition of some sections of the facility.
He explained that during an earlier visit, hospital management drew his attention to the condition of the facility, prompting him to personally inspect the affected areas.
According to him, the condition of the Male Ward and Children’s Ward was particularly concerning, leading him to commit resources towards their renovation.
The renovation works included general painting, replacement of damaged windows and louvres, removal of old grilles, replacement of fallen ceilings and damaged fascia boards, as well as the replacement of rotten window and door frames.
Other works included the replacement of damaged roofing sheets and ceiling fans, repairs to damaged floors and other improvements to the wards.
Dr. Pelpuo said the intervention was only the beginning, adding that he remained committed to supporting the broader renovation of the hospital as resources become available.
“Even if we could not do everything at once, we could at least start doing something immediately,” he said.
He pledged to continue supporting the hospital and other health facilities in the constituency.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Issah Nura Danwanaa, also highlighted other interventions in the health sector undertaken under the current administration in collaboration with the Member of Parliament.
These include the completion and furnishing of a new maternity block, which was initiated under the previous administration.
According to the MCE, the facility has been completed and furnished with 12 new beds and includes two delivery theatres and other facilities required to support maternity services.
He also announced the completion and furnishing of the Busa maternity block, following its handover to a contractor about seven months earlier.
The MCE said additional Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds were also being provided across the municipality.
Two newly completed and furnished CHPS compounds are expected to be commissioned, while construction of additional CHPS compounds at Zingu is scheduled to commence.
He said the interventions formed part of efforts to expand access to quality healthcare services within the municipality.
Dr. Pelpuo also visited the Wa Municipal Health Directorate, where additional medical beds were presented for distribution to health facilities, including CHPS compounds and health centres.
He explained that the equipment was not earmarked for any particular facility and that the Municipal Health Directorate would determine where the beds were most urgently needed.
The MP said his support to the health sector extended beyond medical equipment, pointing to the construction of a conference centre for the Municipal Health Directorate.
He said the facility would provide a suitable venue for meetings, training programmes, conferences and other official activities of the Directorate.
Dr. Pelpuo also highlighted an existing vaccine storage facility supported during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He explained that, at the time, the municipality lacked adequate facilities for vaccine storage, prompting him to support the establishment of the facility, including the installation of an appropriate cooling system.
The Municipal Health Director, Dr. Alex Bapula, expressed appreciation to Dr. Pelpuo for his continued support to the health sector.
She recalled that the MP had supported the sector with medical items around the same period the previous year, describing the latest intervention as evidence of his continued commitment to healthcare delivery.
Dr. Bapula said the newly donated beds would particularly benefit mothers accessing delivery services at health centres and CHPS compounds.
He explained that some facilities previously lacked appropriate beds for maternity services, making the donation particularly significant.
According to him, the total value of the MP’s current support to the health sector was approaching GH¢300,000.
The Municipal Health Director also expressed appreciation for the construction of the conference centre, noting that the Directorate previously relied on external venues for several programmes and official activities.
He said he had raised the need for a conference facility with the MP, who subsequently committed to supporting its construction.
“On behalf of the Municipal Health Directorate, on behalf of my team, and on behalf of the people we serve, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Honourable Member of Parliament for this generous gesture,” he said.
Dr. Pelpuo, while outlining his development agenda, also appealed to residents and stakeholders to support efforts aimed at improving the constituency.
He acknowledged the importance of constructive opposition in a democratic society but cautioned against actions he said could obstruct development.
He urged residents and stakeholders to focus on achieving results and improving the welfare of the people rather than undermining development initiatives.
“Here, we work to achieve results. We don’t work to bring people down,” he said.
Dr. Pelpuo maintained that his focus remained on fulfilling commitments made to constituents and supporting development across the constituency.
The Management of the Wa Municipal Hospital, represented by Dr. Matilda Aseyoro, Pediatrician and Acting Medical Superintendent, together with the Municipal Health Directorate and other stakeholders, expressed appreciation for the interventions.
They described the support as significant to ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and service delivery.
The renovated Male and Children’s Wards are expected to provide improved conditions for patients and healthcare workers, while the additional medical equipment and infrastructure support are expected to strengthen healthcare delivery across the Wa Municipality.
