The Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq., has called on families, schools, religious and traditional leaders, the media and security agencies to work together to protect young people from substance abuse.

Speaking at the 2026 Dumba Festival celebrated by the chiefs and people of the at the forecourt of the Wa Naa’s Palace, Hon. Puozuing said the future and development of the Upper West Region and Ghana depend on the protection and responsible upbringing of the youth.

He stressed that the fight against substance abuse cannot be left to one institution alone.

“Families, schools, religious and traditional leaders, the media and security agencies must all play a role in protecting our young people from substance abuse,”

He called on the youth to remain disciplined and responsible, saying “economic transformation and job creation require young people who are prepared to take advantage of available opportunities.”

Hon. Puozuing urged young people to reject substance abuse and prepare themselves to seize opportunities created by the government.

“Families and traditional communities must also work together to shape the behaviour of young people,”

He added that protecting the youth is essential to securing the future and sustainable development of the Upper West Region and the country.
