Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has defended his support for Mary Haruna amid criticisms that he showed bias during the nomination process for the District Chief Executive (DCE) position in the Nadowli-Kaleo District.

Speaking at a ceremony to commission educational projects in the district, the Speaker acknowledged his support for Mary Haruna, stating that her loyalty and dedication over the years had earned his confidence.

“Some of you were right about me supporting her. I will always support her because from childhood, she has grown up with me. She has worked hard to get to where she is today,” he said.

According to Rt. Hon. Bagbin, personal loyalty and commitment should not be disregarded because of political opposition.

“I cannot say that because of politics I should forget about her simply because some people are against her. That is their own problem,” he added.

The Speaker, however, stressed that politics is an open contest in which every qualified citizen has the right to participate. He noted that regardless of the outcome, he would support whoever emerges victorious.

He urged political actors and supporters to view politics as a platform for healthy competition rather than hostility and division.

“Politics is not a game of hatred; it is a game of bringing out the best in us,” he said.

Rt. Hon. Bagbin explained that political contests should focus on ideas, competence and commitment to development, adding that the electorate ultimately has the responsibility of choosing leaders they believe can advance the interests of their communities.

He further emphasized that the development of Nadowli-Kaleo and other parts of the country depends on constructive competition among those seeking public office.

The Speaker therefore called on political actors to avoid internal conflicts and instead concentrate on delivering development and improving the lives of the people whenever they are entrusted with leadership responsibilities.
