The Wechiau Traditional Area has described the death of Mr. Tijani Abu, popularly known as “Master One,” while in police custody as unacceptable, calling for justice and strict adherence to due process.
In a press statement signed by the Paramount Chief, Naa Imori Nandong Gomah II on Friday, July 31, 2026, the traditional authorities expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding Tijani Abu’s arrest and subsequent death.
They called on the relevant state institutions to conduct an independent investigation and ensure accountability.
The traditional leaders maintained that no individual should be arrested, assaulted, or killed without due process and credible evidence, stressing that the rule of law must be upheld at all times.
The Wechiau Traditional Area also condemned all forms of violence and communal conflict, reaffirming its commitment to peace and urging residents to remain calm while allowing the justice system to take its course.
“We understand that several other persons have also been arrested, framed and beaten in relation to this conflict without evidence being presented. The conduct of the police since this conflict has been one sided as over 20 arrest of Wechiau and Kandeu youth have been sustained for several months,” the statement said.
“The chief palace of our late Toulu Naa was burnt at Toulu which was reported to the Wa West District Police Command but nothing has been done about it. There is an open show of bias by the police who carry themselves about to show support from politicians and other persons in authority,” the statement added.
Additionally, the traditional authorities called for the release of Fuseini Musah, alleging that he has been detained without evidence. They further demanded that anyone found culpable following investigations be made to face the full rigours of the law.
The community appealed to the government and security agencies to ensure justice is served and to take steps to restore public confidence in the country’s security institutions.
