A health promotion officer T tge Wa Municipal Hospital, Amamata Yussif, has advised the public to avoid taking painkillers without a prescription whenever they experience body pains, warning that self-medication could pose serious health risks.

She gave the advice on Wednesday morning while speaking on Kangyiri Ansuma, the morning show on Kangyiri Radio.

According to Amamata, many people have developed the habit of taking painkillers at the slightest sign of pain without seeking medical attention to determine the underlying cause of their condition.

She cautioned that while painkillers may temporarily relieve pain, they do not treat the root cause of an illness and could delay proper diagnosis and treatment.

The health practitioner urged individuals experiencing persistent or severe body pains to seek medical care instead of relying on over-the-counter pain medication without professional advice.

“Do not rush to take painkillers to cure body pains without doctor’s prescription,” she said.

She explained that inappropriate use of painkillers could result in adverse health effects and, in some cases, worsen existing medical conditions.

Amamata encouraged the public to consult qualified healthcare professionals before taking any medication, stressing that proper diagnosis is essential for effective treatment.

She also called on the public to adopt healthy healthcare-seeking behaviours by visiting health facilities whenever they experience unusual or recurring symptoms rather than resorting to self-medication.
