The Upper West Regional Director of Agriculture, Vuozie Frederick Domah, has urged farmers intending to cultivate maize to complete planting and apply the first round of fertilizer no later than 20 July to maximize yields during the current farming season.
According to Mr. Domah, farmers cultivating soybean and groundnut should ensure that all planting activities are completed by the second week of July. He explained that delaying soybean planting beyond this period could adversely affect grain development.
“Soybean planted after the second week of July may grow well vegetatively, but the seed filling will be very poor. You may end up with small, poorly filled grains, which reduces both quality and market value. Farmers should aim for well-filled seeds to obtain better prices,” he advised.
Mr. Domah further highlighted the government’s Feed Ghana Programme, describing it as the country’s flagship agricultural initiative aimed at boosting food production and improving livelihoods.
He explained that the programme comprises several components, including the livestock component, known as Enkoko and Keteng Keteng, as well as the crop production component, under which numerous farmer-based organisations (FBOs) and cooperatives have been registered to receive government support.
He added that the programme also includes a vegetable production component, which seeks to support farming groups and communities with irrigation facilities to enable year-round vegetable cultivation, enhance domestic food production, and strengthen Ghana’s food security.
