Women engaged in farming in Wa, in the Upper West Region, have called for sustainable funding mechanisms to enable them to expand their farms and other agribusiness ventures.

Speaking to the media during the distribution of free Feed Ghana Programme fertilizer to peasant farmers, the women highlighted the financial challenges confronting them, saying limited access to credit continues to hinder their productivity.

They lamented that many women farmers have been forced to scale down their farming activities due to inadequate funding, and appealed to the government and financial institutions to provide affordable financing to support women in agriculture.

Memunatu Sulemani, a farmer from Jonga said “Last season, we incurred losses on our farm due to erratic rainfall. We used to harvest between 25 and 30 bags of rice from two acres, but last year we harvested only about six bags. If the government could provide us with financial support, we would be very grateful.”

Ayisha Issahaku also indicated that “We are facing financial challenges, and these days it is difficult to borrow money from people you know. What I need is funding. If the government can provide us with financial support, it will help us expand our farming activities.”
