The construction of the Duori Maternity Ward in the Wa Municipality has received a significant boost after businessman Alhaji Alhassan Gbangu adopted the project and committed to completing and furnishing it.
The maternity ward project was initiated by the chiefs and people of Duori, who mobilized community resources to begin construction in response to growing pressure on the existing health facility caused by the area’s increasing population.
His intervention will not only see the construction of the facility completed but will also include furnishing the maternity ward to make it operational for the benefit of expectant mothers and the wider Duori community.
According to representatives of Alhaji Alhassan Gbangu, the businessman became aware of the community’s initiative through media reports.
Moved by the urgent need to improve maternal healthcare services in the area, he decided to take over the project to ensure its completion.
Handing over of the project to businessman Alhaji Alhassan Gbangu, the Chief of Duori, Naa Blintoh T. Abdulai, revealed that the decision by the community to construct a maternity ward was inspired by a disturbing experience at the Duori Health Centre.
The chief recounted that he and some community members had visited a patient at the health centre when they found a woman in labour receiving care in the same ward as male patients.
Staff of the facility explained that it was originally established as a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound but was later upgraded to a health centre to meet the growing healthcare needs of the community.
They noted that the increasing demand for services has placed significant strain on the existing infrastructure, causing the ageing building to deteriorate.
As a result, they said there is an urgent need to expand the health centre with additional structures to improve healthcare delivery.
The project consultant, Ing. Paul Asare, said he will conduct a structural integrity assessment of the maternity ward and prepare a detailed cost estimate within the next two weeks to pave the way for the project’s completion.
