The Wa Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaji Issah Nura Danwanaa has disbursed GH¢179,360 to 49 persons living with disabilities in the Wa Municipality to support their economic empowerment and improve their livelihoods.

Speaking at the disbursement ceremony at the assembly hall of the Wa Municipal on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, the MCE described the initiative as a demonstration of government’s commitment to creating opportunities for persons living with disabilities to become financially independent and better manage their personal and family needs.

He explained that the support is intended to assist beneficiaries who wish to establish businesses, support their children’s education, access healthcare, and address other pressing needs.

“This initiative has come to support persons living with disabilities. It aims at improving livelihoods. It is not an opportunity for us to collect the money and spend it in a way that will not benefit us in the future,” Alhaji Moomin said.

He urged beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly and invest them in activities that would generate sustainable income and help reduce poverty.

The Wa MCE noted that the allocation for persons living with disabilities under the District Assemblies Common Fund has increased from three percent to five percent, resulting in increased support for beneficiaries.

According to him, the disbursement process has also become more transparent, with government placing emphasis on ensuring that the funds achieve their intended purpose of improving the living conditions of persons living with disabilities.

He further explained that the increase in the amount received by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) from the Common Fund has contributed to higher allocations for disability support.

“Previously, some amounts were retained at the Common Fund Secretariat in Accra, but now a larger percentage is being released to the Assemblies. This has increased the resources available for supporting persons living with disabilities,” he stated.

Alhaji Moomin encouraged beneficiaries to make good use of the support, stressing that the objective is to help them improve their standards of living and achieve long-term financial stability.

He added that the Municipal Assembly will continue to provide support to more persons living with disabilities as the process of compiling beneficiary records progresses.

“The challenge we have is the compilation of the album, which is now a very serious requirement. As we are able to compile the album and enroll more people, more persons will also get the opportunity to benefit. This is not the beginning, and this will not be the last,” he assured.

The MCE disclosed that the GH¢179,360 support package was the first phase of the intervention, with more beneficiaries expected to benefit in subsequent disbursements.
