The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Upper West Regional Athletics Association, Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, has pledged to lead a new era of athletics development in the region with a focus on talent identification, capacity building, and improved structures.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Mornah said the new executive is committed to harnessing the region’s sporting potential and nurturing athletes capable of competing on national, continental, and international stages.

He acknowledged that the Upper West Region is blessed with talented young athletes who possess the determination and competitive spirit needed to excel but noted that inadequate training equipment, facilities, and resources remain major challenges.

Mr. Mornah stressed the need for a change in mindset towards athletics, urging communities and parents to recognize sports as a viable pathway that can provide scholarships, employment opportunities, exposure, and national recognition.

As part of the association’s roadmap, the chairman announced plans to organize the first Upper West Regional Athletics Meet within the next three months to scout, develop, and showcase talents across the region.

He added that the association will collaborate with the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) to roll out training programmes for coaches, technical officials, and administrators to strengthen the foundation of the sport.

The new leadership also intends to establish district athletics associations in all 11 districts of the region to decentralize development and create more opportunities for young athletes.

Mr. Mornah assured stakeholders that the association will focus on action and results as it begins its mandate to elevate athletics in Upper West.

Members of the executive committee are Bernard Mornah as Chairman, Julius Angsomwine as Vice Chairman, Banyeseri Martha as Treasurer, Iliasu Osman Mustapha as Organizing Secretary, and Issahaque Abdul Moomin as Secretary.
