Residents engaged in groundnut processing in Gbegru, a community in the Zingu Electoral Area of the Wa Municipality in the Upper West Region, have appealed to government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and philanthropists to support their businesses with funding and modern processing equipment.
The residents say groundnut oil and paste processing is their primary source of livelihood, but inadequate capital and the lack of appropriate machinery have limited their productivity and income.
Speaking to Kangyiri Radio, one of the processors, Alimata Imori, said the women struggle to earn enough from the business to meet their basic household needs.
“We are struggling to get decent work. We depend on the processing of groundnut oil and paste, but it is not lucrative. Because we don’t have enough funds, we only process 10 bowls of groundnuts. Sometimes, we get only GH¢30 as the proceeds, which is insufficient even to cook for the household,” she said.
Yaa Shaibu also explained that access to financial support would enable the women to purchase more raw materials, increase production, and improve their incomes.
“If we get benevolent organisations that can support us with funds, it will boost our economic activity,” she appealed.
She also called for the provision of modern groundnut processing equipment, noting that the women have heard of machines that can make processing faster and more efficient.
“We will be grateful for support to boost the groundnut processing business. We heard there is a machine used to process the groundnuts,” she added.
The women expressed optimism that investment in their businesses would not only improve their livelihoods but also create employment opportunities and contribute to the economic development of the community.
