The Acting Upper West Regional Director of the Department of Community Development, Nafisa Yahya, has emphasized the need to teach children their responsibilities alongside their rights, describing it as essential to building disciplined and responsible citizens.
Madam Yahya made the remarks during an engagement with children under the department’s Child Protection Programme, where participants were educated on child rights and responsibilities.
She said the department partnered with Bliss Eye Care under the ”Blissful Sight for Kids” project as part of its mandate to collaborate with state and non-state institutions to promote health, education, and social welfare.
According to her, the Child Protection Programme focuses on both responsive and preventive interventions aimed at safeguarding children from abuse, neglect, and other vulnerabilities.
She noted that concerns over increasing indiscipline among young people have made it necessary to place greater emphasis on children’s responsibilities, rather than focusing only on their rights.
“We have realized that many children are aware of their rights but know little about their responsibilities. Therefore, through our engagements, we emphasize responsibilities so that children can grow into disciplined and responsible citizens,” she said.
Madam Yahya added that partnerships with organizations such as Bliss Eye Care help strengthen efforts to improve the wellbeing of children and create opportunities that support their growth and development.
