The Member of Parliament for Wa East, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, has expressed concern over what he described as the poor performance of candidates from the district in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Dr Jasaw said the best aggregate recorded by a candidate in the district was 22, a result he described as unacceptable.
“Quite unfortunately, Director of Education, I couldn’t get aggregate low. The best grade I got recorded for me was aggregate 22. And that is terrible, to say the least,” he said.
The MP said he was disappointed with the results and called on the Wa East District Directorate of Education to put measures in place to improve academic performance in the district.
“I am very disappointed at the performance that you, as Director of Education, has been able to give me for my students. I think it’s unacceptable,” Dr Jasaw said.
He urged the District Director of Education to review the management arrangements of the Directorate to strengthen supervision and improve teaching and learning outcomes.
“I need him to change his management arrangements so that we can have effectiveness in supervision and also delivery of teachers,” he said.
Dr Jasaw stressed that while he did not intend to interfere in the day-to-day administration of the Education Directorate, he would monitor the measures being introduced to improve performance.
“Without intending to micromanage his office for him, I will be interested in following and seeing what performance improvement arrangements is put in place by the management of our District Directorate of Education,” he said.
The MP also called on traditional leaders and other stakeholders in the district to support efforts to improve education.
He further announced an expansion of his educational support programme for BECE candidates.
According to him, the support, which previously focused on candidates who achieved aggregates between 6 and 15, will this year be extended to candidates who obtain aggregates from 6 to 35.
“For this year, we have decided that we will expand the support grade from aggregate 6 to 35,” Dr Jasaw said.
He added that about 233 students were expected to benefit from the MP’s bursary support programme.
Dr Jasaw had earlier announced plans to support outstanding BECE candidates in the constituency, including full educational sponsorship for the overall best candidate from senior high school through to tertiary level.
