The Upper West Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Alhaji Mujeeb Suleyman, has accused the government of failing to fulfil its promise to pay teachers who have recently gained promotion.
He said the affected teachers have yet to receive the financial benefits associated with their promotions, despite assurances from the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Alhaji Suleyman made the comments following a strike by pre-tertiary teacher unions over the non-payment of financial benefits associated with teachers’ promotions.
According to him, the continued delay has caused concern among teachers, particularly those who have been waiting for their promotion-related benefits after receiving assurances from the education authorities.
“There is an official letter signed by Hon. Clement Apaak, as well as another letter stating that the monies would be paid as part of the September salaries. However, this has not been done, which suggests that the plight of teachers has been neglected,” he said.
He called on the government and relevant agencies to take steps to ensure that the affected teachers receive their payments as promised.
The GNAT Upper West Regional Chairman was speaking on issues affecting teachers and their welfare in the region.
