Poor mobile network connectivity in some communities in the Upper West Region is hampering the operations of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), affecting the delivery of services under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Officials disclosed this during the NHIA Upper West Regional Office’s 2025 End-of-Year Performance Review Meeting held on March 3, 2026, to assess the region’s performance and develop strategies to improve service delivery.

The meeting reviewed the Authority’s activities from January to December 2025 and brought together staff of the regional office, District Managers, District Public Relations Officers, District Accountants, and District Management Information Systems (MIS) Officers.

According to a performance report presented by the Regional Operations Manager, Lilly Yendaw, the region recorded significant progress despite the operational challenges. She revealed that by the end of 2025, the region had achieved 108 percent population coverage under the NHIS.

The report also indicated that indigent registration reached 143 percent of its target, while mobile renewal adoption stood at 22 percent.

However, Ms. Yendaw noted that weak mobile network connectivity in some communities continues to affect district operations, particularly in the use of digital platforms and mobile renewal services.

Other challenges highlighted during the meeting included inadequate staffing in some district offices, limited budgetary support, and unlawful charges imposed by some healthcare providers.

In his opening remarks, the Upper West Regional Director of NHIA, Tindogo Rashid Mohammed, urged participants to actively engage in discussions and maintain commitment and discipline in service delivery.

He also encouraged staff to intensify efforts to register vulnerable populations onto the scheme, noting that the region faces significant multidimensional poverty.

Chairman of the meeting, Titus Sorey, Associate Director at the Tamale Claims Processing Centre and former Upper West Regional Director of NHIA, also urged staff to remain diligent in the discharge of their duties.
