The National Youth Organizer of the Peasant Farmers Association, Lawie Bonzo Vincent, says the association resisted attempts by politicians to interfere with the distribution of fertilizer under the government’s Feed Ghana programme.
Speaking on the distribution exercise, Mr. Vincent revealed that some individuals sought to influence the allocation of the fertilizer, but the association ensured the inputs reached the intended beneficiaries without political interference.
“There were attempts by politicians to interfere with the distribution of the Feed Ghana fertilizer, but we resisted them,” he said.
He explained that members of the association also demonstrated commitment to the programme by using their own resources to ensure the fertilizer was delivered to farmers across the region.
“We used our monthly dues to cover the cost of transporting the fertilizer to the farmers,” Mr. Vincent added.
Meanwhile, the Wa Municipal Secretary of the Peasant Farmers Association, Abubakari Adam, highlighted the challenges confronting farmers despite the fertilizer support.
According to him, the high cost and limited availability of tractor services continue to affect farming activities, making land preparation difficult for many smallholder farmers.
He noted that a farmer now requires about GH¢5,000 to cultivate a farm, placing a heavy financial burden on peasant farmers.
Mr. Adam appealed for increased government support, particularly in improving access to affordable mechanization services, to help farmers increase productivity and contribute to national food security.
