The Wa Municipal Director of Agriculture, Vuozie Frederick Domah, has cautioned that Ghana could face a maize shortage by 2028 if the current decline in maize cultivation continues.

According to Mr. Domah, the effects of farmers reducing maize production this season may not be immediately noticeable. However, he warned that the long-term consequences could be significant.

“When farmers do not cultivate maize this season, the impact will not be felt immediately. But in the next two years, we will begin to experience the effects,” he said.

Mr. Domah attributed the decline in maize production to farmers switching to more profitable crops, particularly soya, due to better market prices and stronger demand. He warned that if the trend persists, maize production could fall below national demand by 2028, with potential implications for food security and rising prices.

He called for measures to improve maize marketing and ensure farmers receive fair prices to encourage continued production of the staple crop.
