The Upper West Region will plant 50,000 tree seedlings under the government’s 2026 Tree for Life Initiative to restore degraded lands and address climate change.

Speaking to Kangyiri Radio, Upper West Regional Forestry Commission Manager Kwame Oteng Awuah said the programme promotes environmental conservation, forest restoration, and sustainable land management.

He said the initiative responds to environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, indiscriminate tree felling, and forest encroachment.

The region’s target will be achieved through amenity planting, the Trees on Farms Initiative, and the Youth Forest Champions Programme, which will restore 100 hectares of degraded forest land. An additional 30,000 seedlings will be distributed to farmers and institutions.

Mr. Awuah said about 70 percent of trees planted last year survived, highlighting growing community support. He urged residents, schools, religious groups, and traditional authorities to participate and help nurture planted trees.

On the issue of dumping waste at the wa forest, he said a lot has been done to prevent people from dumping waste in the forest and said that over 15 people has been arrested and sent to court.

The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development in Ghana.
