Women from the National Association of Local Authorities Ghana (NALAG) in the Upper West Region have raised strong concerns over what they describe as an unjust disparity in the appointment of women to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

This was made known during an event held in Wa on July 4 to commemorate International Women’s Day, under the global theme “Give to Gain.”

The gathering brought together both elected and appointed assembly members, with participants emphasizing the urgent need for fair representation of women in local governance structures.

Addressing the gathering, Upper West NALAG Ladies Regional Coordinator, Millicent Zuuri, lamented the persistent gender imbalance in government appointments to MMDAs, which participants described as “unfortunate and unfair.”

She cited the Wa East District as a stark example, where no woman has been appointed to the assembly.

Millicent Zuuri, who also serves as the elected assembly member for the Samatigu Electoral Area, lamented the continued sidelining of women despite these legal provisions.

She encouraged women to remain resilient and strategic, noting that leadership often demands balancing multiple roles.
