The Upper West Regional Division Two Middle League has exposed a harsh reality for the representatives of Zone 2, with both clubs enduring a nightmare campaign and rapidly becoming the competition’s most generous point donors.

Before the Middle League kicked off, many expected Wa Suntaa SC and Sombo Freedom Stars to fly the Zone 2 flag high after impressive performances during the group stages.

Instead, the two clubs have found themselves at the wrong end of the table, serving as convenient targets for their rivals.

Wa Suntaa SC, who stormed through the group phase unbeaten and entered the competition with a reputation as one of the tournament’s dark horses, have suffered a dramatic collapse.

In three matches, the former division one club have managed just a solitary goal while conceding a staggering nine. Their once-solid defence has been repeatedly breached, leaving supporters wondering what has happened to the side that looked untouchable only weeks ago.

The story is not much different for runners-up Sombo Freedom Stars. The Freedom lads have also struggled to find their footing, shipping seven goals while scoring only three. Their defensive frailties and inability to convert chances have left them chasing shadows against better-organised opponents.

Perhaps the most worrying statistic is that the two Zone 2 representatives remain the only clubs in the Middle League yet to register a single point. While other contenders battle fiercely for supremacy, Wa Suntaa and Sombo Freedom Stars have become the fixtures every team circles on the calendar.

The situation has become so dire that rival clubs are reportedly counting three points into their tally before even stepping onto the pitch against the struggling pair.

What was expected to be a showcase of the strength of Zone 2 has instead turned into a lesson in missed opportunities and defensive lapses.

With the tournament continuing and matches running out, both clubs face a race against time to restore pride and prove they belong among the region’s elite. Otherwise, their Middle League campaign may be remembered not for their achievements in the qualifiers, but for becoming the competition’s whipping boys.
