Bernard Anbataayela Mornah has been sworn in as the Chairman of the Upper West Regional Athletics Association with a commitment to transform athletics development and create more opportunities for athletes in the region.
The swearing-in ceremony, conducted by the President of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), also saw other members of the executive committee officially assume their respective roles.
The new executive members include Julius Angsomwine as Vice Chairman, Banyeseri Martha as Treasurer, Iliasu Osman Mustapha as Organizing Secretary, and Issahaque Abdul Moomin as Secretary.
In his address, Mr. Mornah pledged to lead the association with dedication and work towards turning the region’s sporting talents into competitive athletes capable of representing Ghana at national, continental, and international competitions.
He acknowledged the abundance of athletic talent in the Upper West Region but noted that challenges including inadequate training equipment, modern facilities, and resources continue to hinder the growth of the sport.
The chairman stressed the need for a change in perception towards athletics, adding that sports can provide young people with opportunities through scholarships, employment, exposure, and career development.
“One of our key responsibilities, therefore, is to educate our communities and change perceptions about sports and athletics. We must help our people understand that athletes are not merely individuals running on tracks and fields,”- he stated.
As part of the association’s plans, he announced that a regional athletics meet will be organized within the next three months to identify, nurture, and showcase talents from across the region.
He further disclosed that the association will collaborate with the Ghana Athletics Association to organize training programmes for coaches, technical officials, and administrators to improve the standard of athletics.
“We shall collaborate closely with the Ghana Athletics Association to organize training programmes for coaches, technical officials, and administrators to strengthen the foundation of athletics development within the region,”- Mornah added.
The new administration also plans to establish district athletics associations in all 11 districts of the Upper West Region to expand participation and strengthen grassroots development.
Mr. Mornah assured stakeholders that the association will focus on results-driven initiatives aimed at positioning Upper West as a competitive force in Ghana athletics.
